Hi all,
this is my very first post, so I'm a complete newbie. I have an urgent problem with Pinboard, which I need to get sorted asap as I have a huge university assignment due in tomorrow.
I need to be able to have a link in my Pinboard Profile which links back to my Blog (on Wordpress). I've set up my profile, including the link. I now have a "profile" link up next to "howto" etc. When setting up my profile, for Visibility I checked the box for "the entire internet" rather than the box for "only pinboard users". My profile actually states: "the entire internet can see this profile".
When I log out of Pinboard, I cannot see my profile. It must be visible, as we are supposed to be creating a public "Web presence", & the tutors who are marking our work must be able to see it without the use of passwords! I have emailed Support with this question, but I'm not sure of the response time (or the time difference; I'm Tasmania, Australia). I have just joined Pinboard, after trying to use Delicious & finding out how awful it is! Clunky design, & terrible usability. I hope I won't have to go back to Delicious!
Thanks in advance,
Michelle :)

Date: 2013-08-18 05:06 am (UTC)I'm having no problem viewing your bookmarks or your profile page, whether I'm logged in or not. (I'm assuming your pinboard acct name is the same as your dreamwidth.)
I'm viewing the page: http://pinboard.in/u:uphillfun/profile/public/
(However, when I try to click to your Wordpress, I get this:
http://uphillfun.wordpress.com/ is marked private by its owner. If you were invited to view this site, please log in below. Read more about privacy settings.)
Other than the Wordpress link, looks just fine from here. :)

Date: 2013-08-18 05:56 am (UTC)Yes, "uphillfun" is also my Pinboard acct/username. When I click on the link you provided above to: u:uphillfun/profile/public/
to my surprise I found I can go to my profile just fine, even though I'm not logged in. But when I just go to: u:uphillfun
I can't see the link to my Public Profile.
It was baffling & now more so. I've already tried viewing the Profiles of other users. I can see them when I'm logged in, but not when not logged in. I went to: pinboard.in/directory to get a list of other users with (presumably) fully-Public Profiles, but I can only see their profiles when I'm logged in. When not logged in, I never see a link that says: "profile".
I usually use Firefox but I've also tried it in IE, with no luck. I thought it might be something to do with my old system: Windows XP (fully updated)... But I've just checked it on a very modern system.
If you just go to: pinboard.in/u:uphillfun
can you see a "profile" link?
It should be there, next to the number of my bookmarks, but I can't see it...
That's what I need. I could put the full link (that you kindly gave me!) in my Wordpress blog, but once my tutor had come to my Pinboard pages, & had a look around, she would not be able to return to my Blog from within Pinboard. Because once she's left my Public Profile, there's no longer a link "profile" on my front page. The only way for her to get back to my Blog from Pinboard, would be to use the Back button (perhaps many times) to return to her first port of call on Pinboard. I hope that all makes sense! I'm not used to trying to explain these things in writing. Also, my punctuation probably leaves a lot to be desired! My brain is very tired from too much study!
I've marked my Blog at Wordpress as completely private for now, as it's still a complete mess with a lot of "test" posts. That's easily fixed when I'm ready. ;)
Thanks again for the quick & helpful response,
:)

while logged in, I do see the link to your profile, next to your username and subscribe. When logged out, though, it's gone.
It doesn't look like there's a way back to your profile from your bookmarks without using the back button, unfortunately. At least not when logged out. Not that I can see. I've tried with my own account as well, which also has a fully public profile atm, and no luck.
I guess it's meant to be a sort of security/privacy feature of the site? Maybe your instructors would accept that if you made a notation to that effect?

Ah, okay, good news, then!

Date: 2013-08-18 08:34 am (UTC)As you say, it must be some kind of (odd) security feature of the site. They need to add a clear explanation of what the difference between their two types of profiles is on the Edit Profile page.
I might try your suggestion re my tutor. Going back to Delicious would be horrible.
I haven't heard from Pinboard Support yet, so extra thanks to you!
